The team's pursuit of a rotation upgrade has taken an unexpected turn, leaving fans and analysts intrigued. With Edward Cabrera now off the market, joining the Cubs, the Yankees are exploring other options to bolster their pitching staff.
Joel Sherman of the New York Post reveals that the Yankees are shifting their focus away from Cabrera. Instead, they remain interested in trading for Freddy Peralta from the Brewers or MacKenzie Gore from the Nationals. However, a deal for Tarik Skubal with the Tigers seems unlikely due to Detroit's substantial demands.
As is often the case during the offseason, the Yankees have been linked to numerous prominent free agents and trade candidates. Yet, they have yet to make a significant move. While the re-signing of Ryan Yarbrough and Paul Blackburn adds depth to their pitching roster, these additions don't quite provide the elite talent the Yankees desire for their starting rotation.
Here's where it gets tricky: the Yankees technically have enough starting pitchers to get by with Max Fried, Luis Gil, Cam Schlittler, Will Warren, and Yarbrough until Carlos Rodon and Gerrit Cole return from their respective surgeries. But, as Sherman points out, there's a catch. Any injuries or setbacks could disrupt this plan, and Clarke Schmidt's availability for the 2026 season is uncertain due to his recent Tommy John surgery.
The Yankees need more than just a backup starter; they need a pitcher capable of starting a playoff game. This addition would not only provide insurance against injuries but also address the potential challenges of Schlittler's first full Major League season or Fried's workload management after a career-high innings pitched in 2025.
Interestingly, most of the starting pitchers linked to the Yankees this offseason have been trade possibilities rather than free agents. This could indicate that the Yankees are reserving their free agent budget for other priorities, such as Cody Bellinger, who is reportedly their top target. If a deal with Bellinger doesn't materialize, they might pursue another elite player like Bo Bichette.
And here's a twist: while the Yankees were initially interested in Tatsuya Imai, Jon Heyman reveals that they viewed him more as a reliever than a starter. The team didn't make an offer, possibly due to the bidding exceeding their budget for a relief pitcher. Imai eventually signed with the Astros, leaving the Yankees to explore other options.
Heyman also sheds light on the Yankees' negotiations for Cabrera, which included prospects like right-hander Ben Hess and outfielder Dillon Lewis, along with another lower-level prospect. However, the Marlins opted for the Cubs' offer, which included Owen Caissie, Cristian Hernandez, and Edgardo De Leon. Caissie, a highly-rated prospect who has already debuted in the MLB, could be a valuable addition to Miami's outfield.
In a potential future trade scenario with the Marlins, Heyman hints at a possible interest in Dillon Lewis, a talented outfielder who impressed in his first full season of pro ball. This could be a name to remember for Yankees fans.
