While most European riders are enjoying their off-season break, this Australian race nestled in the mountains is gaining traction as an early-season highlight. "I'm not expecting much this weekend," says Oscar Onley, a Scottish rider who's already making waves in the rebuild phase of his career. "For the Aussies, they're deep into training, and this race is a great test before the nationals. It's all about opening those lungs!"

Stage 1, the Gaps Loop, is a 90.2km challenge featuring the infamous Happy Valley climb and the Tawonga Gap ascent. With an average gradient of 6.3% over 7.6km, this climb will quickly separate the contenders from the rest. Last year, two 19-year-olds, Talia Appleton and Jack Ward, conquered this stage and launched their careers into the top-level cycling world. Both have since secured development team contracts, proving that the Tour of Bright is a true talent incubator.
Saturday's Stage 2 is a 17.4km individual time trial in Buckland Valley. With Australian time trial champions Plapp and Chapman, along with Olympic gold medallist Kelland O'Brien, the competition will be fierce. But will riders from overseas bring their A-game to this club-run race? It's a question that adds an element of uncertainty to the proceedings.
The final stage on Sunday takes riders to the top of Mount Buffalo, a 59.7km effort with over 1,000m of elevation gain. Plapp, who affectionately calls it the "greatest mountain in the world," has a special connection to this climb and holds the Strava leaderboard position. However, with his relentless promotion of the race and the caliber of riders he's attracting, Plapp might find it harder to defend his KOM and overall winner title from the past two years.
"It used to be a breeze," Plapp admits. "But now, with the talent coming in, it's going to be a tough battle. I might regret inviting some of these riders!"
