A Real-Life Fairytale: When Invisible Strings Bring Two Souls Together
Love is a mysterious force, and sometimes, it's the invisible threads that bind us. Emma Quigley and Jeffrey Smolens' love story is a testament to this. Despite being strangers on paper, their first date at Jajaja Mexicano revealed a surprising connection.
"It's like we had invisible strings tying us together," Emma shares. "Jeff's family and mine were intertwined in ways we never imagined."
A Year Later: The Proposal and a Dreamy Staycation
After becoming a couple, Emma and Jeff moved to Jeff's hometown, Darien, Connecticut. It was during a visit to the historic Great Island estate that Jeff proposed privately, overlooking the water.
"I had a feeling it was coming, but I never expected it that day!" Emma recalls. The technology consultant then treated Emma to a romantic staycation at The Inn at GrayBarns, complete with all the special touches.
A Coastal Wedding: Embracing Serenity in Rhode Island
For their wedding, Emma and Jeff chose the Weekapaug Inn in Westerly, Rhode Island. The Eastern coastline held a special calm for the couple, and they wanted to share this serenity with their guests.
"The buyout allowed us to create an intimate, personalized world," Emma explains. "Every detail, from design to hospitality, was carefully crafted."
The Planner Bride: Crafting a Modern Heirloom Wedding
Emma took on the role of planner, immersing herself in the process. She hired each vendor individually, shaping the atmosphere to reflect their vision.
"It was challenging but incredibly rewarding," she says. "Our wedding was a modern take on an heirloom celebration—artisanal, bespoke, and intentional."
Sarah Heaney of Leila James Events joined as the coordinator, bringing Emma's vision to life. The floral designer, Florals by Semia, played a crucial role in crafting the weekend's aesthetic.
A Coastal Aesthetic: Shells, Waves, and Nature's Beauty
The weekend's aesthetic embraced their coastal surroundings. Shell motifs and organic wave-like designs adorned the venue, creating a serene ambiance.
"We wanted to converse with the environment," Emma explains. "I didn't want to wear a dress; I wanted to be part of the beautiful setting."
Bridal Fashion: Coastal-Inspired Looks
For her bridal shower luncheon, Emma wore an ivory Lesea Berry dress, paired with an archival shell brooch. The light and airy style reflected her connection to the coast.
At the rehearsal dinner, Emma channeled her inner "dahlia in human form." She collaborated with Patricia Voto of One/Of to create a unique look.
"The 1930s sheer trumpet gown was hand-painted with dahlias, and I wore a custom corset and shorts set underneath," she describes. The set was crafted from deadstock lace, dyed to match the dahlias.
For her wedding day, Emma had a custom look made in Italy. She wore floral silk-georgette robes from Loretta Caponi, designed with their Florence atelier.
"The robes were so special—they had a rippled hem, like I was moving underwater," she recalls.
The Wedding Gown: A 'Pretty Marsh Creature'
Emma's wedding gown was a customized version of Danielle Frankel's oceanic Alexandra dress. The design featured floral motifs and organza strands, resembling jellyfish with baroque pearls.
"I wanted to be a 'pretty marsh creature,' emerging from the shoreline of our ceremony backdrop," Emma shares. The gown was customized with sage brushstrokes and a removable Watteau cape.
"The gown flowed beautifully with Semia's meadow florals, and my clematis bouquet mirrored the movement," she remembers.
The Pearl of the Evening: A Custom Mini Dress
For the final hours, Emma wore a custom Clio Peppiatt mini dress. "I became the pearl of the evening," she says. "It was a bespoke corset and skirt set, with real pearls—a first for Clio!"
Inspired by Taylor Swift's 2025 Grammys look, Emma had a "J" added to the dress. But her something blue was not on her, but on her maid of honor, who wore three different blue Markarian gowns throughout the weekend.
