TDSB Adjusts Application Timeline for Specialized Programs
The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) has made a significant change to its admissions process for specialized programs, causing some concern among parents. The board has extended the application period, recognizing the challenges of the new merit-based system.
Initially, the application window was set to open on November 10th and close three weeks later. However, this timeframe proved too short for many families, especially considering the need to prepare portfolios and audition tapes. As a result, the TDSB has pushed back the deadline to November 24th, providing a more generous 19-day window for applications.
This decision comes after the board announced a shift from a lottery system to a merit-based approach, following guidance from the Minister of Education's appointed supervisor. The specialized programs, offered at both the elementary and secondary levels, focus on arts, math, science, technology, and leadership.
Elementary students will be evaluated based on their portfolios and audition videos, while secondary students must meet specific report card benchmarks. The application process is designed to assess a combination of academic performance and practical demonstrations of knowledge and skills.
The TDSB's spokesperson, Ryan Bird, emphasized the importance of this adjustment, stating, 'The applications period has been adjusted to provide students with more time to plan and prepare for the required elements of the application.'
This move aims to ensure a fair and comprehensive evaluation process, allowing students to showcase their talents and academic strengths effectively. The extended deadline is a positive step towards a more inclusive and thoughtful admissions system.
