Ice Chips: Maple Leafs' Defenceman Benning Set to Make His NHL Return

Toronto Maple Leafs
Defenceman Matt Benning is reportedly set to join the Toronto Maple Leafs' lineup for their upcoming game against the New York Islanders, according to Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun. This marks Benning's first NHL game in two seasons, and it's a significant moment for the 31-year-old, who hasn't played since October 29, 2024, as a member of the San Jose Sharks. Interestingly, Benning's wait for a chance to play has been long, spanning 40 years since his uncle, Jim, was traded by the Maple Leafs.
When asked about his time with the Marlies, Benning expressed his appreciation, saying, 'When the chance comes, I'll be appreciative.'
Benning's journey to the NHL hasn't been without its twists and turns. Just two days after his last game with the Sharks, he was traded to the Maple Leafs as part of a deal for defenceman Timothy Liljegren.
During his three seasons with the Sharks (2022-2024), Benning accumulated 26 points in 98 games.
Columbus Blue Jackets
The Columbus Blue Jackets have activated star defenceman Zach Werenski from injured reserve. Werenski, a key player for the team, missed the last four games due to a lower-body injury sustained on December 20 against the Anaheim Ducks. The 28-year-old is an exceptional talent, ranking second among NHL defencemen in goals (14) and points (40) in 35 games this season. His 6-foot-2, 214-pound frame also contributes to his top-tier performance, as he ranks second among all NHL players in time on ice, averaging 26:48 per game.
Werenski was recently selected to represent Team USA in the men's ice hockey roster for the 2026 Olympic Winter Games.
Washington Capitals
Forward Pierre-Luc Dubois has resumed skating, according to head coach Spencer Carbery, marking a significant step in his recovery from abdominal surgery. The 27-year-old underwent the procedure on November 9, with an initial recovery timeline of 3-4 months. However, Dubois has only played in six games this season, recording nine shots and zero points. He is expected to return to the ice sometime after the Olympic break in February.
Buffalo Sabres
Defenceman Michael Kesselring will miss the upcoming game against the Columbus Blue Jackets due to a lower-body injury, as announced by coach Lindy Ruff. In 16 games with the Sabres this season, the 25-year-old has yet to register any points while averaging 15:14 time on ice. The team has indicated that Jacob Bryson will likely take his place in the lineup.
Chicago Blackhawks
The Chicago Blackhawks have assigned forward Dominic Toninato to the Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League. Toninato, 31, has contributed one assist in five games with the Blackhawks this season. He has also recorded five goals and 17 points in 25 games with the IceHogs.
