Nazareth House: The Show Must Go On, Despite the Odds
In the face of adversity, the students and staff of Nazareth House Primary School in Londonderry have proven that determination and community spirit can overcome even the most challenging circumstances. The school, which had to close for several months due to structural concerns with its 122-year-old building, has now staged its annual musical, Oliver Junior, based on Charles Dickens' classic novel, Oliver Twist.
The story of this remarkable achievement is one of resilience and unity. When the school was shut down in December 2025, the community was faced with a daunting task: to find a new home and stage a production that had been a beloved tradition for years. The principal, Róisín Blackery, described the situation as a true testament to the school's spirit, stating, 'In true Nazareth House spirit, the school community refused to let the curtain fall.'
The challenges were immense. The school had to relocate to a neighboring school, St Anne's Primary, and then adapt to new temporary facilities in Lumen Christi College. The roof of Nazareth House was temporarily repaired, but the upper floor remained closed, impacting the music room, toilets, and classrooms, including the breakout area for students with special educational needs.
Despite these obstacles, the students and staff showed remarkable determination. Former principal Paul O'Hea, who played a pivotal role in the production, was inspired by the children's passion and talent. He said, 'They have so much talent and ability and really just took on the challenge. It's a wonderful production and well worth seeing. I think everyone will be impressed. The children showed such remarkable resilience after all they've been through.'
The students themselves expressed their enthusiasm and dedication. Rebecca, who plays the Artful Dodger, described the experience as 'really fun' with 'amazing dances and singing.' Gail, another participant, was glad to be back at Nazareth House after the upheaval, emphasizing the collective effort and the positive outcome. Fiachra, who portrays a policeman, highlighted the sense of community and the opportunity to work together.
