Interior Health: Long-Term Care Facilities in Crisis - Thompson-Okanagan Outbreaks (2026)

The situation in the Thompson-Okanagan region is alarming, with a surge in outbreaks putting the health of vulnerable residents at risk. Interior Health has recently announced multiple outbreaks in long-term care facilities, leaving many concerned about the well-being of their loved ones.

But the story doesn't end there. On January 13, a respiratory outbreak caused by RSV struck the Reid's Corner unit of Sun Pointe Village in Kelowna, affecting the residents' breathing. This was just the beginning of a series of unfortunate events.

The very next day, January 12, a human metapneumovirus outbreak was identified at Desert Sage 1, part of Mariposa Gardens in Osoyoos, and on January 10, Pine Grove in Kamloops faced a similar fate with a respiratory infection outbreak.

The outbreaks continued to spread. Westview Place in Penticton was hit on January 9, with the entire facility affected by a human metapneumovirus respiratory infection. Mount Ida Mews in Salmon Arm wasn't spared either, with a respiratory infection outbreak declared on January 7.

And the list goes on. On January 5, Ridgeview Lodge in Kamloops, the Hamlets in Vernon, and Brocklehurst Gemstone in Kamloops all faced respiratory and gastrointestinal outbreaks. Bastion Place in Salmon Arm has been battling a respiratory outbreak since December 31, and The Hamlets at Westsyde in Kamloops has been under a gastrointestinal outbreak since mid-December.

Here's where it gets crucial: Interior Health maintains a public list of outbreaks (https://www.interiorhealth.ca/health-and-wellness/communicable-diseases/health-facility-outbreaks), which is updated regularly. This list includes hospitals and long-term care facilities facing various infections, such as Clostridium difficile, gastrointestinal illnesses, and respiratory infections.

With flu season at its peak, as reported by Interior Health (https://www.castanet.net/news/BC/593393/Doctor-urging-vaccinations-as-flu-cases-spread-throughout-BC-Interior), the region is facing a challenging time. The question remains: How can we best support these facilities and protect the health of our elderly and vulnerable citizens? Share your thoughts and stay informed with the latest Vernon News. What do you think should be done to manage these outbreaks effectively?
