New Delhi is navigating a complex situation, with the US urging India to halt Russian oil purchases. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has a clear strategy: prioritize the energy needs of its vast population, while diversifying energy sources to ensure security.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized, "Ensuring energy security for 1.4 billion Indians is our government's utmost priority." India's approach is to diversify energy sourcing based on market conditions and international dynamics.
But here's where it gets controversial... India's stance on Russian oil has been consistent, but it clashes with US allegations that Russia uses oil revenue to fund the Ukraine war. Russia denies this charge.
The MEA's recent statement follows the White House's claim that India agreed to stop importing Russian oil, favoring US supplies. This commitment led to the withdrawal of additional tariffs on India's Russian oil purchases.
The Kremlin maintains that India is free to choose its oil suppliers. Dmitry Peskov, Kremlin spokesperson, acknowledged Russia's awareness of its position in the global oil market, stating, "India has always purchased these products from other countries. Therefore, we see nothing new here."
And this is the part most people miss... As part of its trade deal with the US, India will reduce or eliminate tariffs on a wide range of US goods, including industrial products, food, and agricultural items. In return, the US will apply an 18% reciprocal tariff on certain Indian goods, such as textiles, apparel, and chemicals.
