I recently stumbled upon another addition to the ever-growing collection of Harlan Coben adaptations on Netflix, and I must say, it's yet another maddeningly watchable entry in this series. However, despite this change of scenery, the show remains classic Coben through and through, which is to say, it's maddeningly watchable crap with bells on.
The story centers around David Burroughs, a muscular everyman serving a life sentence in a Maine penitentiary for the murder of his young son. Despite his claims of innocence, no one believes him, and he spends his days dolefully punching fellow prisoners while immersed in thoughts of self-reproach. But then, an ex-sister-in-law and disgraced investigative journalist, Rachel Mills, turns up with a recent photograph of a frolicking youngster who looks very much like David's son. This discovery sparks a new hope for David, and he and Rachel embark on a quest to uncover the truth.
As they delve deeper into the mystery, a labyrinthine global conspiracy unfolds, and David and Rachel find themselves up to their fugitive nostrils in questions: where is David's son? If it wasn't Matthew who was murdered, who was it? And who is the shadowy puppet-master to whom everyone from the shifty prison warden to the icy charity boss keeps sending cryptic texts? The answers, however, are as elusive as ever, and the show leaves us with more questions than answers.
What makes "I Will Find You" particularly fascinating is the way it plays with our expectations. We're led to believe that the show is building towards a grand revelation, but instead, we're left with a series of red herrings, narrative cul-de-sacs, and splutter-inducing plot holes. It's as if the show is deliberately trying to confuse us, and yet, we can't help but keep watching, drawn in by the promise of a satisfying conclusion. In my opinion, this is what makes Coben's work so compelling: the way he can take a simple premise and twist it into something so complex and engaging that we're willing to overlook its flaws.
However, I can't help but feel that the show is missing something. Despite its watchability, it lacks the depth and nuance that make Coben's best work so memorable. The characters feel one-dimensional, the plot is full of holes, and the twists and turns feel more like cheap tricks than clever storytelling. But then again, I'm a critic, and I'm probably just being too hard on the show. After all, it's just another entry in the ever-growing Coben collection, and it's not like I can resist watching them all.
