The Untold Story of Kojima's OD: A Journey to Japan and Beyond
Get ready for an exclusive deep dive into the intriguing world of game development! Eidos Montreal, a studio known for its creative prowess, found itself at the heart of a unique collaboration with the legendary Kojima Productions. But here's where it gets controversial: after a year of working on Kojima's highly anticipated 'OD' (formerly known as 'Overdose'), some developers were asked to make a life-changing move - to Japan.
Our sources, who provided further insights into the recent layoff situation at Eidos Montreal, revealed that 'OD', initially known as 'P21', had been in development at the studio for a year in 2023. However, a request from Kojima Productions changed everything. They wanted the developers to relocate to Japan and sever ties with Eidos Montreal.
At the time, approximately 20 dedicated developers were working on the project. Little did they know, their journey was about to take an unexpected turn.
Kojima's 'Overdose' made headlines in November 2022 when a monumental leak occurred. A leaker, known as 'The Snitch', obtained gameplay footage from YouTube's backend, revealing a glimpse of Death Stranding's Mama (Margaret Qualley) in a blue dress. This leak officially confirmed the game's working title as 'Overdose'.
Fast forward to 2023, at The Game Awards, Kojima, alongside Jordan Peele, officially announced that the game would be titled 'OD'. They even teased that it would be a love-it-or-hate-it experience. In September 2025, a new teaser, titled 'Knock', kept the hype alive.
But the road to release hasn't been smooth sailing. The game faced several setbacks, including a delay in filming due to the 2024-2025 SAG-AFTRA video game strike. Tragically, on November 23, 2025, Ubo Kier, who was set to star in 'OD', passed away at the age of 81.
Kojima expressed his grief in a heartfelt statement on X, reflecting on his close relationship with Ubo Kier and the impact of his passing.
As of now, the official release date for 'OD' remains a mystery, but it's confirmed that Xbox Game Studios will publish it.
