Breaking News in the Boxing World! Eddie Hearn, the driving force behind Matchroom Boxing, has hinted at a potential extension of their broadcasting deal with DAZN. This news has significant implications for boxing fans worldwide.
Matchroom and DAZN initially joined forces back in 2018, marking the beginning of a five-year agreement that saw DAZN exclusively stream Matchroom's US shows. The partnership deepened when Matchroom made a complete switch to DAZN after their contract with Sky Sports in the UK concluded. This move was a game-changer, and DAZN has since expanded its boxing roster to include other major players like Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions, Kalle and Nisse Saurland’s Misfits Boxing, and Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy. Matchroom solidified their commitment with a three-year extension in 2023, which is set to expire next year.
But here's where it gets interesting...
In recent years, Netflix has entered the boxing arena, primarily through Jake Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions. Their upcoming bout featuring Anthony Joshua on December 19 is just the latest example. Hearn himself has also collaborated with Netflix, producing a six-part series titled ‘Matchroom: The Greatest Showmen’, which offered a behind-the-scenes look at the company and Eddie’s relationship with his father, Barry Hearn.
Could this lead to a more extensive partnership, with Netflix potentially becoming Matchroom's primary broadcast provider?
Hearn addressed these speculations, stating, “No, I mean, obviously, we’ve just done our show with them, six episodes on Netflix. We're exclusive to DAZN. There’ll be an announcement about our future in due course. We’re in a great position. Got the best stable in boxing. Obviously, I’m the best promoter in the world. So yeah, we’re very happy with DAZN. It’s allowed us to grow globally and have a one-stop shop for fight fans all around the world.”
When asked if Matchroom would likely extend their current deal with DAZN, Hearn responded with a simple, yet telling, “Yes, I would say so.”
