Is a potential trade brewing that could shake up the Boston Celtics' championship aspirations? The Celtics are at a crossroads as the trade deadline looms, and their decisions could significantly impact their chances. They have some valuable assets to play with, and the question is whether they'll add talent or make some subtractions. If they decide to bolster their roster, they could use players like Anfernee Simons, whose contract is worth a hefty $27.7 million and is expiring, or Sam Hauser, who has a $10 million hit. Their primary focus appears to be on strengthening their frontcourt.
An intriguing possibility, suggested by The Athletic's Jay King, involves LA Clippers center Ivica Zubac. But here's where it gets controversial... his availability is uncertain, but he could be a perfect fit for Boston.
Zubac brings a strong rebounding presence and defensive prowess, qualities that would seamlessly integrate with the Celtics' core. King noted that it's unclear if the Clippers will let go of their big man. However, if he's available, he could be an ideal target for the Celtics. At 28 years old, Zubac aligns with the Celtics' timeline alongside stars like Tatum and Brown, and he should have several prime years ahead of him.
Last season, Zubac earned second-team All-Defense honors and is also a significant offensive contributor, especially with his offensive rebounding. And this is the part most people miss... Zubac's contract would be a major advantage for the Celtics. He's earning $18.1 million this season – more than $9 million less than Simons – and has two more seasons left on a very reasonable deal. The catch? If Zubac is available, the Celtics would likely need to give up a significant amount of draft capital. But, if he's the missing piece, it could be worth it.
This season, Zubac has played in 34 games for the Clippers, averaging 14.8 points, 10.7 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.0 blocks in 31.3 minutes per game. Recent performances include 9 points and 11 rebounds against Charlotte on January 12th, and 17 points with 6 rebounds versus Detroit on January 10th.
Zubac entered the NBA as the 32nd overall pick by the Lakers in the 2016 Draft. Over his nine-year career, he's played in 618 games, averaging 10.4 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 1.4 assists while shooting 60.6 percent from the field. Last season, he was recognized as a second-team All-Defense player.
What do you think? Would Zubac be the missing piece for the Celtics, or would the cost be too high? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
