Get ready for a story that will leave you on the edge of your seat! Bo Bassett, the wrestling phenomenon, has revealed his grand plans for the future, and it's a journey that will take him far beyond the wrestling mat.
At just 18 years old, Bassett has already made a name for himself in the wrestling world. With an undefeated record at Bishop McCort Catholic High School and an insane level of cardio and pace, he's the top recruit of the 2026 class. But Bassett's ambitions extend far beyond high school wrestling.
The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is in his sights, even if it's a decade away.
Bassett's journey has been anything but ordinary. Initially committed to the University of Iowa, he later made the bold decision to switch to Virginia Tech. It was a choice that required guts and a whole lot of consideration.
"The recruiting process was a wild ride," Bassett shared with MMA Junkie. "It took up a lot of time, and it was challenging to balance training and responding to all the calls and messages. But it was a family decision, and we're thrilled to be at Virginia Tech now. The staff, the town of Blacksburg, and the future opportunities here are incredible."
Bassett's immediate goal is clear: the 2028 Olympics. Even with his final year of high school underway and academics a priority, he's found time to build an impressive social media presence and take on additional athletic challenges, like his upcoming match at RAF 5 against Cayden Henschel.
"Competing is one thing, but building your brand and training consistently is another," Bassett explained. "Social media has played a huge role in that, and competing at RAF in college and senior-level tournaments has been a game-changer. Hard work is the foundation of everything we do."
With an exceptional ability to handle the spotlight, pressure, and criticism at such a young age, Bassett has proven himself time and again. Born in Western Pennsylvania, the heart of wrestling country, he's always competed at a higher level. And now, with his collegiate career on the horizon, he's already thinking about the Olympics and, eventually, fighting in the UFC.
"2028 is right around the corner," Bassett said. "By then, I'll be ready to join the senior team. Last year, I placed fourth at the senior level when I was just 18. I'm on track to win that spot in '28 and represent at the Olympics in LA. It's a dream come true: compete for Virginia Tech, get my degree, and then transition into fighting in the UFC."
Bassett recently had the opportunity to rub shoulders with MMA royalty at Kill Cliff FC in Deerfield Beach, Florida, including his role model, wrestler-turned-fighter Jordan Oliver.
"It was incredible to see legends like Robbie Lawler and Gilbert Burns, and some rising stars too," Bassett said. "Training with them taught me a lot. I have a lot to learn, but my wrestling background will make the transition easier. I'm excited to keep pushing forward."
Bassett is 'pretty set' on the UFC, despite the financial allure of staying in wrestling.
He acknowledges that the financials often make more sense to stay in wrestling, but his quest for the UFC is genuine, especially after a conversation with UFC star Michael Chandler.
"Absolutely, it's legit. I'm all in on this," Bassett said. "Being at high-level gyms like Kill Cliff today was inspiring, and spending time with JO (Jordan Oliver) has been amazing. Talking to him about this transition has been incredible."
"I competed on an RAF card with Michael Chandler, and I was a bit hesitant about the stand-up and boxing aspects of fighting. But Chandler told me he didn't take his first punch until he was 22 or 23. Seeing how successful his transition was, with a wrestling background just like mine, has kept me excited about my own journey. These connections have been invaluable."
Bassett's story is a testament to the power of ambition and the courage to pursue your dreams, no matter how far they may seem. Stay tuned as we follow his journey towards the UFC and beyond!
