Big news for Apple Home users: The original Home architecture is on its way out, but you still have time to prepare! Apple has announced that it will be discontinuing support for the older version of its Home architecture on February 10, 2026. This gives you a bit more breathing room than the initially planned Fall 2025 deadline.
This change isn't entirely out of the blue. Hints of this transition were spotted in iOS 18.4 developer beta updates, with messages encouraging users to upgrade to the latest architecture.
So, what does this mean for you? Well, if you're still using the original Home architecture, you'll need to update to the newer version to continue enjoying all the features and functionality of your smart home setup.
But here's where it gets interesting... Apple is urging users to update now to avoid any interruptions. Upgrading unlocks exciting new features like guest access, support for robot vacuum cleaners, and access to Activity History.
To make the switch, you'll need a device running a recent software version:
- iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, HomePod, or Apple Watch
- iOS 16.2 or later, iPadOS 16.2 or later, macOS Ventura 13.1 or later, tvOS 16.2 or later, or watchOS 9.2 or later.
Devices with older software versions connected to an updated home will lose access until the software is updated. This is because the latest Apple Home architecture was introduced with iOS 16.2.
A little history lesson: Back in November 2022, with the launch of iOS 16.2, Apple rolled out a revamped HomeKit architecture, promising speed and performance boosts for your smart home accessories. However, this update caused some initial hiccups, leading Apple to temporarily pull it back in December 2022. It was reintroduced in February 2023 with iOS 16.4.
The upgrade was optional, and many users chose to stick with the older architecture to ensure compatibility with their existing HomeKit accessories.
How to Upgrade to the Latest Apple Home Architecture:
- Open the Home app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
- Tap or click the More button.
- Select Home Settings. If you have multiple homes, choose the one you want to update.
- Select Software Update.
- Tap or click Update Now, and follow the on-screen instructions.
Apple assures that this process updates all your homes simultaneously, so you only need to do it once.
