Alex Lowes' Phillip Island Test: A Tale of Triumph and Trouble
A rider's struggle and a surprising revelation
Amidst the excitement of the WorldSBK test at Phillip Island, Alex Lowes, a seasoned British rider, made a surprising admission. Despite his impressive performance, placing him in the top six alongside his Bimota teammate Axel Bassani, Lowes revealed a critical area of weakness.
"I was pretty useless this afternoon in sector three," Lowes confessed. "It's a part of the track where I usually excel, so clearly, I was doing something wrong."
But here's where it gets controversial... Despite this self-critique, Lowes believes he has podium potential for the upcoming race on February 20-22. He's not alone in this assessment; Danilo Petrucci of BMW also praised the Bimota riders' lap times and the speed of the KB998.
And this is the part most people miss... Lowes, a three-time winner at Phillip Island, has had worse tests and still managed to secure a podium finish. He's confident that his experience and the tight competition in World Superbike could work in his favor.
"I think we shouldn't be too far away. There are at least 10 guys who could be on the podium. It's going to be a dogfight," Lowes said. "I'm looking forward to it because a bar-to-bar battle suits my style."
So, will Alex Lowes' strategy pay off? Can he overcome his self-proclaimed "uselessness" in sector three and secure a podium finish? Only time will tell, but one thing's for sure: the first race of the year is shaping up to be an exciting one.
