A heartfelt message from Alex Eala to Hailey Baptiste after an unfortunate injury-enforced retirement in Dubai.
The talented Alexandra Eala, a rising star in the tennis world, has progressed to the second round of the Dubai Tennis Championships. However, her victory over Hailey Baptiste was bittersweet, as Baptiste had to retire due to an abdominal injury while trailing 6-4, 0-1.
In a touching display of sportsmanship, Eala approached Baptiste near the umpire's chair, expressing her sympathy. Baptiste explained, "My ab is messed up," to which Eala replied, "I'm so sorry."
But here's where it gets controversial... What does Eala need to work on to challenge for a Grand Slam title?
The match, an enthralling contest on the Dubai Centre Court, ended disappointingly for Baptiste and the fans. Eala, ranked 43rd in the world, will now face Jasmine Paolini in the next round.
In her post-match interview, Eala reflected on the unique challenges of maintaining physical health at the highest level of tennis. She sent a heartwarming message to Baptiste, wishing her a speedy recovery and expressing hope for her return to the court soon.
"It's never easy to advance this way," Eala said. "Being on Tour, I'm learning just how crucial it is to stay physically fit. I truly hope Hailey is okay and makes a swift comeback."
Eala also shared her excitement about the next round, praising the incredible experience of playing in front of such an enthusiastic crowd.
"I'm doing my best to savor every moment on the court," she added.
In the second round, Eala will face a tough opponent in sixth seed Jasmine Paolini. This will be their first-ever meeting on the WTA Tour.
If Eala pulls off an upset victory against Paolini, she will face either Linda Noskova, Sorana Cirstea, or Aliksandra Sasnovich in the subsequent round.
Eala's recent comeback against Sasnovich at the Abu Dhabi Open was truly career-defining, fighting back from 0-4 down in the final set to win 2-6, 6-4, 7-6.
So, how many WTA points could Eala earn if she defeats Paolini?
Currently, Eala has accumulated 65 WTA ranking points following her victory over Baptiste. If she triumphs over Paolini on Tuesday, the 20-year-old will earn an additional 55 points, bringing her total to 120.
As Eala did not participate in the 2025 Dubai Tennis Championships, all 120 points will be added to her ranking after the tournament concludes.
The WTA 1000 Round Points breakdown is as follows:
- R64: 35 points
- R32: 65 points
- R16: 120 points
- Quarter-finals: 215 points
- Semi-finals: 390 points
- Final: 650 points
- Champion: 1000 points
With 390 points to defend in Miami, Eala is entering a critical phase of her career. A strong performance in Dubai could provide her with a safety net heading into the Miami Open in March.
The 20-year-old has proven her mettle by reaching the semi-finals of the 2025 Miami Open, and now the question remains: Can she replicate her Miami success in Dubai?
